Map of where Lucian and Jacenta originated from. Lucian was born in Olita, which is now known as Alytus, Lithuania.  Jacenta was born in Alove which is 3 mi. from Alytus and is actually incorporated at this time.
After the last partition of Poland and Lithuania in 1795, the boundary between Prussia and Russia ran down the Nemunas River.  Thus Alytus (Olita) was divided in half.  The eastern part of the town (Alytus I : Olita) belonged to Russia and was part of the province (gubernija) of Vilnius. The western part (Alytus II: Olita) was in Prussian hands for 12 years, until Napoleon Bonaparte assigned it to the Duchy of Warsaw in 1807. In 1815 it became part of the New Kingdom of Poland, a Russian protectorate. When the Polish state was abolished entirely after the uprising of 1831, and its territory incorporated into the Russian empire, Alytus II (Olita) belonged to province (gubernija) of Augustavas (Augustow) from 1837, and the province of Suvalkai (Suwalki) from 1867.  The administrative separation of the town continued until the restoration of an independent Lithuanian state in 1918, which included the province formally in Poland containing what was formally Olita.
