In the English language there is no letter which corresponds to the Polish L. The letter looks like an English Scrpit L with a slash through it. The Polish letter which looked more like an English L was actually pronounced like an English W. The original spelling with the Polish letter was also with a z instead of the first i, Laszewski. Polish: (Łaszewski): habitational name for someone from any of various places called Łaszewo, named either with the Old Polish noble personal name Łaszcz (a derivative of Polish łaska ‘favor’) or with a form of the personal name Lazarz. Topographic name for someone who lived in an area of cleared woodland. The "ski" refers to "son of" (feminine "ska"). Laszewski is listed as a surname in the early 19th century Poland. It was pronounced Wa szef ski or Wa shev ski. Today some family members pronounce Lasiewski as La-shev-ski while others pronounce as La-sue-ski and still others changed Lasiewski to Forest.
Lucian Lasiewski (Lucyan Laszewski):
Lucian was born on March 5, 1877 to John and Josephine (Wyszynska) in Olita, Poland a part of the region known as Dzukia which was remote, rural and covered with forests. Because of the moving boundries of the countries at that time due to power struggles, the area which was part of Poland, was taken over by Russia and Lucian would record his nationality as Russian. Olita is currently in Lithuania as Alytus. The area has been know for centuries for wild berries and mushrooms.

Lucian had four brothers: Gregory (apparently stayed in old country), Johann, Kazimierz and Klemenz. Johann (John b.1872) Wife: Catherine.
6 children: John, Catherine, Helen, Anthony, Mary, Pauline. Kazimierz (Casimir) (b.1882). Wife: Aniela, also known as Camilla, or Nellie. Two known children: Josephine and Nellie. Shown on 1920 census living at 176 13th St. Jersey City. and Klemenz (b. 1875), Wife: Julia. 6 children: John, Violet, Clemens, Isabelle, Joseph, Peter have been traced to Henderson St. Jersey City, N. J. on the 1920 census. Neither Casimir nor Klemenz were found on the 1930 census. It is known that one of them committed suicide by jumping off the roof of the apartment building.

Lucian married Hiacyntia (English: Jacenta) Raczkiewicz, who was born in 1879 in Alove, a small village about three miles from Olita proper. It appears they were married around Christmas/New Year's 1900/1901. Lucian sailed to America alone leaving his pregnant wife to follow the following year.
Lucian came to the U.S. through Bremen Germany in May 1901. His name was misspelled and mistranscribed from one document to another. The manifest of May 11, 1901(photo) has him listed as Lucian Laschewski. The manifest of the ship Barbarossa (photo) has him as Sizran Laschewski. He arrived at NYC on May 22, 1901. Jacenta and eight month old Helen arrived on the ship Moltke on July 9, 1902 as Tezenta Lassewsky. In 1901 386,000 people left Europe for the USA. It is understandable how names could be written wrong, especially with the language barriers.
Lucian and Jacenta had six children: Helen (b.1901), Franciszek (Frank) (b. 1905), Anna
(b. 1911), Constanti (Connie) (b. 1910), Alfonse (Alfred) (b. 1914), and John (b. 1916). They lived in Jersey City, New Jersey.

Lucian filled out a draft registration card (photo) in 1919 in Jersey City with the Henderson St. address. However, he signed his name Lucyan Lasiewski which was copied as Lucyon Lasiewski. The 1920 census (photo) has him as Luzan with "Anastasia"(Jacenta) and all the children, living on Henderson St, Jersey City. Jacenta died of tuberculosis in June of 1924 (age 45). The 1930 census (photo) has him listed as Louis Lasiewski along with second wife Julia and sons Costanti, Alfred and John living on Fourteenth St. Jersey City. Frank, Helen and Anna were now married.
Lucian worked for the Lackawana Railroad as a dock builder in Jersey City, NJ. When Jacenta died Lucian tried to keep his family together in a four room flat, on the fourth floor at 589 Henderson St. Brother John and family lived at 594 Henderson while Kazimierz and his family lived at 176 Thirteenth St. That area is now where the Holland Tunnel is connecting N.J. to N.Y.C. When Lucian married his second wife Julia, in 1930, his new wife did not want to take care of all the children and the younger boys didn't like her. With Helen now married to Leo Lemanski, the younger siblings, Alfred and John lived with Helen, Leo and their two young sons Leo and John.
Julia died in 1933. Lucian remarried for the third time in 1935. His third wife, Stella died in 1951.
Lucian only had children with Jacenta.
Lucian died on November 10, 1965 and is buried with Jacenta and Julia in Holy Cross Cemetery, Arlington, N.J. Block 6, Section G, Tier A. Grave 331
